What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are designed to replace the roots/root of your teeth/tooth. This allows for new fixed, or removable, replacement teeth to be fitted.

The implant itself is a titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic and can take as little as 30 minutes for a single tooth. If multiple implants are being fitted, this will take longer.

Once fitted, the implant must fully heal before a crown or denture is attached. The healing process takes between six weeks and six months. Being fully healed means that the jawbone has fused around the implant, ensuring perfect stability.

Do I Need Dental Implants?

If you have any missing or damaged teeth you may benefit from dental implants. They can improve your smile and your self-confidence.

However, in order to get dental implants your jaw must be fully developed, meaning that they are not appropriate for those under the age of 18. Furthermore, before undergoing dental implants, your general oral health will be assessed. Do Dental Implants Hurt?

Dental implants are fitted under a local anesthetic, so you will not experience pain throughout the procedure.

However, whilst the healing process is getting underway you may be subject to some discomfort. This should be reasonably minimal and can be assuaged by using over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
