Porcelain Veneers

One of the most well-known and effective procedures in cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers have been enhancing smiles since the 1980s. A high-quality and less invasive alternative to crowns, veneers are a thin wafer-like shell that is fitted and bonded to the front of the tooth, changing the size, shape, length and positioning to straighten teeth and cover chips and discolouration. Today, modern “smile design” combines the extensive qualifications of your dentist with high-powered digital technology to deliver totally custom-made veneers that suit your personal objectives.
Treatment is over several visits but can be achieved in as little as two weeks. After thoroughly discussing your aims and desired results with you, we’ll take moulds and imagery to order your custom-fit veneers. Your next appointment will involve tooth preparation and fitting the veneers with a special cement, polishing and finishing, and you’ll be ready to step out with your new smile. We’ll arrange a follow-up to review the placements, answer any queries you have, and most importantly, make sure you’re delighted with your results.

Affixing porcelain veneers requires varying amounts of tooth preparation. This includes your dentist removing the enamel from the teeth affected to provide a rough surface to bond the veneer to. The removal of the enamel is permanent and irreversible, and means that maintenance of veneers, and replacement as required, is essential to prevent tooth decay.

Some patients also report increased tooth sensitivity and minor discomfort in the gums for the first week post-treatment which usually subsides as the mouth and teeth adjust.

In general, patients should not experience any pain during the treatment. Where required, we’ll use a local anaesthetic before starting work. Often the most common source of discomfort is keeping the jaw open for the duration of treatment! As mentioned, some patients may experience some tooth sensitivity in the week following the treatment which is treatable with ibuprofen.

With correct preparation and placement at initial treatment, and good oral hygiene and regular maintenance afterwards, porcelain veneers can last 10 -15 years. Whilst porcelain is very strong, your personal habits will affect how long your veneers will last – care should be taken to protect the veneers from trauma (e.g. wearing a gumshield during sport and not using the teeth to open packaging.)
