Affixing porcelain veneers requires varying amounts of tooth preparation. This includes your dentist removing the enamel from the teeth affected to provide a rough surface to bond the veneer to. The removal of the enamel is permanent and irreversible, and means that maintenance of veneers, and replacement as required, is essential to prevent tooth decay.
Some patients also report increased tooth sensitivity and minor discomfort in the gums for the first week post-treatment which usually subsides as the mouth and teeth adjust.
In general, patients should not experience any pain during the treatment. Where required, we’ll use a local anaesthetic before starting work. Often the most common source of discomfort is keeping the jaw open for the duration of treatment! As mentioned, some patients may experience some tooth sensitivity in the week following the treatment which is treatable with ibuprofen.
With correct preparation and placement at initial treatment, and good oral hygiene and regular maintenance afterwards, porcelain veneers can last 10 -15 years. Whilst porcelain is very strong, your personal habits will affect how long your veneers will last – care should be taken to protect the veneers from trauma (e.g. wearing a gumshield during sport and not using the teeth to open packaging.)
